The Ray of Hope Accelerator, organized by the Biomimicry Institute, is a six-month program designed to support early-stage startups that draw inspiration from nature to address environmental challenges. For the 2025 cohort, applications are open until 11:59 PM EST on April 25, 2025. 

Program Benefits:

Funding: Each selected startup receives $15,000 in non-dilutive funding.

Eligibility Criteria:

Nature-Inspired Solution: The innovation should be based on biological principles, ecological relationships, or nature’s strategies to address environmental issues.

Sectors: Applicable sectors include Chemistry and Materials, Built Environment, Manufacturing and Robotics, Renewable Energy, Transportation and Mobility, Food and Agriculture, Conservation and Remediation, Life Sciences and Medtech, Biotechnology, Consumer Products (including Cosmetics and Textiles), Water and BlueTech, and Climate Technology.

Stage: Startups typically in Pre-Seed, Seed, or Series A stages, with a working prototype (Technology Readiness Level 4 or higher) and having raised between $250,000 and $5 million in funding. However, all applications are reviewed holistically, and exceptions may apply.

Team: A legally established company with a minimum of two full-time team members.

Participation: At least one founder or executive must participate in all program activities, including the in-person Nature Retreat. 

Program Structure:

The accelerator runs from September 2025 to February 2026 and is primarily remote, with the exception of a one-week in-person gathering. This includes participation in Climate Week NYC and a four-day Nature Retreat in the U.S., with travel expenses and accommodation covered. Weekly remote programming involves live expert sessions and workshops tailored to the startups' needs.

Interested startups can apply through the Biomimicry Institute's website. There is no fee to apply, and the program does not take equity in participating companies.

How to Succeed in Getting into the Program

To increase your chances of being selected for the Ray of Hope Accelerator 2025, follow these key strategies:

1. Develop a Strong, Nature-Inspired Solution

Your startup should leverage biomimicry, meaning your product or service should be inspired by natural ecosystems, organisms, or biological processes.

Clearly demonstrate how your innovation contributes to sustainability, conservation, or climate resilience.

2. Show a Working Prototype (TRL 4+)

The program favors startups that have a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 4 or higher (meaning a working prototype has been developed and tested in a controlled environment).

Your solution should have a clear market need and a well-defined target audience.

Show that you have a business model that can sustain and scale your impact.

5. Showcase Fundraising and Growth Potential

The program prefers startups that have raised between $250,000 and $5 million, but this is not a strict requirement.

If you haven’t raised funding yet, demonstrate traction through grants, customers, pilot programs, or partnerships.

6. Craft a Strong Application

Clearly articulate your startup’s mission, vision, and impact.

Provide compelling evidence of your solution’s effectiveness (data, testimonials, pilot studies).

Align your responses with the program’s goals—focus on biomimicry, sustainability, and business scalability.

7. Be Ready for Active Participation

At least one founder or executive must be available for all program activities, including online sessions and in-person retreats.
