The Japan Africa Dream Scholarship (JADS) is a prestigious capacity-building initiative jointly launched by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Government of Japan. Upon completion of their studies, scholars are expected to return home and apply their newly acquired knowledge and skills to address national and regional challenges. The program thereby contributes not only to individual capacity building but also to broader socio-economic advancement in Africa.

Scholarship Coverage
The JADS Program offers comprehensive financial support for up to two years (24 months), which includes:

Full tuition fees for the duration of the study program
Monthly living stipend to cover accommodation, food, and daily expenses

Round-trip airfare between the scholar’s home country and host university

Health insurance, typically arranged through the university
Additional six-month extension post-graduation for preparatory study, internships, or job placement activities
Research grant (for scholars pursuing thesis-based degrees) to support fieldwork and publication
Preparatory or bridging courses such as computer literacy or academic language training (when relevant and necessary)

Costs Not Covered by the Scholarship
While the scholarship is generous, it does not extend to:

Expenses for family members or dependents
Participation in extra-curricular training or seminars not part of the academic program
Language training not offered by the university
Costs of educational equipment (e.g., laptops) or non-compulsory materials
Supplementary educational activities, including field trips or conferences, unless explicitly covered under the program
Scholars must also disclose any additional sources of financial support. The JADS Program is designed to complement, not duplicate, other funding. In cases where scholars receive parallel scholarships or financial aid, the JADS stipend may be reduced or revoked.PhD scholarships

Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the JADS Program, applicants must:

Be citizens of an African Development Bank regional member country
Possess a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a related field

Have a strong academic record and relevant professional experience

Demonstrate a track record of contributing to national development
Meet the admission criteria of a partner university in the selected field of study
Commit to returning to their home country upon completion of the program
Preference is given to applicants who are working in public sector institutions, research bodies, non-profit organizations, or development-related private enterprises.
